Ars gratia artis

Working as a scholar at a university the risk is high to get absorbed by such very important questions as: "Why can rats discriminate between synthesized sentences of Japanese and Dutch when played forward, but not when they are played backward?"

Escape from the Ivory Tower

The rat example mentioned above is not made up, but was a research of neuroscientists at the University of Barcelona. Besides, do you recognize your mother tongue when played backward?

My research is far more down-to-earth. It is about history and culture, literature and language. It is about some of the roots that make us who and what we are.

Research fields:
Old Icelandic/Old Norse language and literature
Norse mythology
Old Norse religion
...to name just a few

Extracts: Riding the Tree, Der nordgermanische Gott Loki aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive

Competence

I am a scholar of Old Norse/Old Icelandic, recently confirmed by my doctoral degree achieved in Old Norse/Old Icelandic studies and by my many publications in this field, particularly on Norse mythology & religion, Old Icelandic literature and linguistic aspects of Old Icelandic. One of them, the Old Icelandic grammar in Italian language, is used as the standard grammar book for students learning Old Icelandic by several universities in Italy. To me language and culture always go together and both are my passion.
